You Wont Believe How I Cleared My Acne

Believe it or not, there was a time when I had terrible, horrible, no good very bad skin. Today I am blessed with beautiful clear skin, but acne has definitely been a struggle in my life. I am grateful every day for my now clear skin.

I was a senior in high-school and I began to develop acne, even though it’s not life threatening, as a young teenager it was very debilitating for me. I tried everything over the counter to clear my skin: creams, lotions, potions. Nothing worked.

I remember I used to get ready, do my entire makeup/hair etc, and then didn’t want to actually leave the house because I was so insecure about my skin.

I was finally went to a dermatologist and was prescribed a very serious acne medication called Accutane. For those of you that don’t know what that is, it’s a drug that definitely works, but has very serious side effects, and can even cause death due to liver failure.

I really didn’t want to take the drug, and I really didn’t think my acne was that bad. I picked up my first month’s prescription of Accutane and just stared at it in my room. My doctor knew how scared I was, so she then suggested I try birth-control first. I was 17 (a week away from 18), a virgin, and lived in a very strict Persian house-hold. “Birth Control” sounded so bad to my mom that she preferred I risk my life with Accutane lol.

Well, I didn’t. I tried the birth control! My doctor initially prescribed me what she thought would be the best pill for my skin, “Ortha Tri Cylin.” It broke me out!! Ahhhhh I was so angry. My skin was even worse than before I started. She then switched me to an entirely different kind, a monophasic pill (meaning the hormone levels stay the same all month with each pill) called “Desogen.”

THAT PILL WAS F*CKING SANTA CLAUS FOR MY SKIN! Within 4 months, my skin was so clear, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I still got an occasional pimple or breakout, but I didn’t have acne anymore.

I was on Desogen for years, literally from 18 until I finally stopped at 27. I took a break around 21, but after a few months I started to have more than usual breakouts, so I got right back on until I was old enough that I thought I outgrew my acne (27).

I have to admit, my skin was not the same the past 2 years without Desogen. I was a lot oilier, and had a pimple or two quite often. But, overall my skin was beautiful, and I didn’t want to pump hormones in my body anymore, so I was happy without BC.

Two months ago, however, my joint doctor (I have arthritis in my wrists) of all people put me back on birth-control!!! I was secretly SO excited because I knew clear-oil free skin was on the way. This time, I am taking a newer version of Desogen, it’s called “Kariva.” It works the same way (monophasic) only it is lower in hormones overall (and thus better for you).

I am 34 years old now, and am still on the Kariva. I see my gynocologist regularly (shot out to my beautiful cousin Dr. Thais Aliabadi), and am always reassured it is completely fine to be on the pill for this long.

For those of you that may have started birth control for your acne, know that it takes about 3 months for your body to adjust, clear skin won’t happen overnight. Most acne is hormonal (which is why we get it as teenagers), and birth control in itself are hormones, so it makes sense that if they balance you out, you’ll get clear.

I feel bad for men with acne since they don’t have this as an option, but compared to when I was a teenager, there are so many things available on the market now (lasers and amazing new prescriptions).

So, my “cleared my acne” skin secret: Birth Control! Even though I didn’t need it for “birth control”, they were worth taking for me. There are so many different types, and every girl is different so what is best for me may not work for you and if you are considering taking birth control for any reason you should visit your doctor.

My advise: If you suffer from acne and are a woman, ask your doctor about trying birth control. If you do try it, don’t give up before 4 months. As I said, your body can go a little out of whack the first 3 months while it adjusts, so it may work for you, it will just take time.

Hi Lilly! Love you! Just wanted to mention here for anyone reading that sometimes birth control can be a good bridge while changing lifestyle habits… i.e. eating more nutritious food and working on gut health. Acne can be a sign that something is out of balance internally. The new area of Functional Medicine is a great thing to look into if this approach interests you. xoxo

Hi Lily, I just have a suggestion… Don’t you think it would have been wise to have before and after pictures if you had any so that people become thrilled about the result. This is just a suggestion not a criticism.
    Thank you.

For a post about recovering from acne, I would have really liked to see a before picture, so I could actually relate in some way instead of attempting to use my imagination to believe you at some point struggled with skin issues. I would have at least appreciated a make up free, clean and & clear skin picture, but unfortunately your dolled up professional pics just seem out of place if you’re trying to relate to the plight of those with skin issues.
